I’m planning to install LED light strips on my deck, under the railing and on the stairs. Total length will be about 180 ft, and it will be split into two sections, one for the stairs and one for the railing.
I’m using JOYLIT 24V LED strip lights, 5000K, 120 LEDs/m, pretty bright, and I’ll be controlling them with wireless controllers. Now I’m trying to figure out what transformer I should use to power everything safely.
Does anyone have experience with a setup like this? What size transformer would make sense?
Thanks for sharing the details of your LED setup.
Based on your configuration (24V LED strips, about 180 ft total, split into two sections), we recommend using two 24V 500W waterproof LED transformers. Each transformer will power one section, which helps ensure stable output and reduces voltage drop on longer runs.
Recommended setup:
Quantity: 2
Output: 24V DC
Power: 500W each
This solution will give you enough power and better reliability for outdoor use.
Can this power supply be installed outdoors in damp locations?
Yes. It is designed with waterproof housing suitable for outdoor applications (landscape, garden, facade lighting), but should be placed where water doesn’t accumulate directly.
Will it overheat under long-term full load? Are there protections?
Integrated protections for overload, short circuit, over-temperature, ensuring safe operation with automatic limiting or shut-down under fault conditions.
Under normal use, a properly selected transformer will not overheat during long-term full load operation.
We always recommend choosing a power supply with at least 20–30% extra capacity above your actual LED strip load. This margin helps reduce thermal stress and ensures stable performance over extended periods.
All our transformers are designed with built-in protection mechanisms, including:
-
Over-temperature protection: automatically shuts down if internal temperature becomes too high
-
Over-current protection: prevents damage caused by excessive load
-
Over-voltage protection: protects connected LED strips from voltage spikes
-
Short-circuit protection: immediately cuts power in case of wiring faults
For best heat dissipation and long service life, please also ensure:
-
The transformer is installed in a well-ventilated area
-
It is not enclosed in a sealed or high-temperature environment
-
Adequate spacing is kept around the unit for airflow
When selected and installed correctly, the transformer can operate safely and reliably for long periods without overheating.
