Using 660nm and 730nm LED Lights for Home Growing

I recently got some 660nm red and 730nm far-red LED lights for my home grow setup, but I’m a bit confused about how to use them properly.

From what I’ve noticed, most problems seem to come from a few things:

Using the wrong light at the wrong stage — red for vegetative growth, far-red mainly for flowering.

Timing the far-red light wrong — it should only come on briefly after the main lights turn off.

Not having proper control — manually switching lights can mess up the plant’s cycle.

Which of these do you think matters the most? Have you ever run into these issues yourself?

Thanks for sharing your question! It’s totally normal to feel a bit unsure when using 660nm red and 730nm far-red LED lights for the first time. From what we’ve seen, most issues usually come from a few small but important details.

First, using the right light at the right stage matters a lot — 660nm red works best during vegetative growth, while 730nm far-red is mainly for flowering and photoperiod control. Timing the far-red light correctly is also key. It should only be on briefly after the main lights turn off, not all day.

Control and coordination can make a big difference too. Without timers or structured schedules, manually switching lights can disrupt your plants’ cycles and affect growth.

For beginners, we recommend setting up a simple lighting schedule, using timers when possible, and paying attention to how your plants respond. Adjusting light duration and intensity based on real observations usually gives the best results.
