I’m currently planning an indoor linear lighting project for a commercial space (a café and public walkway). I’m deciding between COB LED strips and SMD LED strips, and would love to hear real-world experience.
Project requirements:
Continuous, dot-free lighting appearance
Installed inside aluminum profiles, partly recessed
Basic dimming capability (no complex smart system)
Reasonable long-term maintenance cost
Here are a few questions I’m considering:
Is the visual difference between COB and SMD noticeable in real applications?
Which option works better for recessed aluminum profiles to achieve a smooth light line?
Are there clear trade-offs in brightness, power consumption, or lifespan?
If budget is limited, which option offers better overall value?
Real project experience or practical use cases would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We’ve used both options extensively in commercial lighting projects. Here are some practical selection insights based on real applications.
Lighting appearance
If you’re aiming for a continuous, dot-free light line, COB strips generally perform better, especially in close-view installations.
SMD strips can still achieve good results when paired with proper diffusers and deeper aluminum profiles, but they’re less forgiving.
Profiles & installation
Brightness & efficiency
At the same power level, SMD strips often deliver slightly higher brightness, while COB provides softer, more uniform light with better glare control.
Cost & maintenance
COB strips tend to cost more per meter
SMD is more budget-friendly for large-scale projects
Lifespan differences are minimal when drivers and heat dissipation are properly designed
Overall recommendation
Feature or visual-focused areas (counters, accent walls): COB
Functional or long linear runs: SMD for better value
There’s no absolute winner — the best choice depends on your project priorities.
